CDC, “H5 Bird Flu: Current Situation,” https://www.cdc.gov/bird-flu/situation-summary/index.html

According to the CDC, the H5 bird flu is widespread in wild birds worldwide and is causing outbreaks in poultry and U.S. dairy cows with several recent human cases in U.S. dairy and poultry workers. While the current public health risk is low, the CDC is watching the situation carefully and working with states to monitor people with animal exposures. The CDC is using its flu surveillance systems to monitor for H5 bird flu activity in people.

On January 17, the Department of Health and Human Services awarded $590 million in funding to Moderna in part to fast-track the development of an mRNA bird flu vaccine.

This was due to fears of a possible bird flu pandemic, with the strains of bird flu currently circulating in wild birds, poultry and dairy cows. The funding is in addition to the $176 million HHS awarded Moderna in July to develop a bird flu vaccine.
